Joanne Rogers, wife of the late “Mr. Rogers” Fred Rogers, passed away on January 14, 2021.

Joanne, a Pennsylvania resident, was born in 1928. She met and dated Fred while they were at Rollins College. After each continuing their education at separate institutions, they married in 1952.

Fred and Joanne were married for fifty years. After he succumbed to stomach cancer in 2003, the Washington Post says she “sought to carry out his legacy through nonprofit organizations including Fred Rogers Productions and the Fred Rogers Center for Early Learning and Children’s Media.”

David Newell, who played ‘Mr. Mcfeely’ in the 30-year-long Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood, shared sentiments about Joanne quoted in the Post Gazette: “She didn’t take herself that seriously. She was just a good sport and a wonderful, wonderful woman. Very warm, could talk to anybody. She had her own life and career, too.”

Joanne taught piano and also performed concerts with friend Jeanne Morrison. According to People magazine, Joanne said they played “over 300 concerts,” and had two albums.

Of her late husband, Joanne once said, “‘I don’t mean to sound boastful, but he was my icon before he was anyone else’s. Being Mrs. Fred Rogers has been the most remarkable life I could ever have imagined.”The cause of her death is unknown at the time of this publication.
