Ryan Supler has announced he is running for York City Council.

The top issue Supler would like to address if elected is the housing crisis in the City of York. Supler would also like to cut property taxes, regionalize emergency services, and increase grant funding for homebuyers.

Supler, a thirty-three-year-old democrat, is currently working as an Overnight Service Coordinator with the Children’s Aid Society in Southern York, where he assists with the daily operations of the emergency housing shelter.

Supler also currently serves as Outreach Committee Member to the York County Coalition on Homelessness. In this role, he helps sanitize porta-potties for the unsheltered population. He also helps collect food, clothing, and other necessities for those in need.

Supler has been convicted of two DUIs in Pennsylvania and was also charged for fleeing or eluding an officer — a felony offense. Supler previously acknowledged his record during his unsuccessful campaign for York County Treasurer in 2019. Supler says that he has been sober now for over two years, but he hasn’t forgotten where his addiction took him.

“I was kind of left homeless from the release of jail…it was a sticky situation. I can definitely feel for people in these situations, and I know what it is like, and have a deep understanding”.

Supler shared how his recovery consisted of getting more involved with his community, most recently volunteering his time with the York County Food Bank. Supler said that he got involved with the organization last March during the onset of the coronavirus pandemic and has continued to volunteer at least one day a week — usually on Tuesdays to help with the drive-thru distribution that takes place on West Prince Street.

This past summer, Supler was elected to serve as a pledged delegate to Joe Biden at the 2020 Democratic National Convention. Supler has also served as a Pennsylvania Democratic State Committee member since May 2018 when he was elected to a four-year term.

Supler holds a Master of Science from American Public University, a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Baltimore, and an Associate of Arts from Anne Arundel Community College. Supler is also a long-time York County resident, having graduated from Red Lion Senior High School.

York City Council members are elected to a four-year term and are paid $10,000 per year. The Pennsylvania primary election is scheduled for May 18, 2021. Pennsylvania is a closed primary state, meaning that you must be registered with a political party to participate. The last day to register to vote is on May 3, 2021.
