Bear spotted on HACC campus

Bear spotted on HACC campus

Jess Staley, Features Editor

Bear activity in Pennsylvania is not uncommon, but a visit from one on a college campus can be startling.

Several sightings of a black bear on the HACC Harrisburg campus were reported on Wednesday, Jan. 12.

Vito Damone, Executive Director of the Department of Public Safety and Security for HACC, sent an email to warn those on campus to be aware of their surroundings in light of these sightings.

The Pennsylvania Game Commission has been notified, but everyone should still report sightings to Campus Security at 717-780-2568.

Anyone who encounters a bear should keep some safety tips in mind:

  • Bears are more scared of humans than humans are of them,
  • Remain calm and know that bear attacks on people are very rare,
  • Black bears can be scared away with some tactics,
  • Never run away or approach the bear; face the bear indirectly,
  • Make yourself look as big as possible,
  • Make loud noises by yelling or banging items together,
  • Use bear spray should the bear approach you.

Knowing how to be safe is important. For more information, contact Campus Security at x2568.
