The Hershey Theatre recognized excellence in high school theatre this Tuesday when they released their Apollo Award nominations for Central Pennsylvania.

40 nominations and six honorable mentions were handed out by the Apollo Awards, which is a Tony Award-style program that honors high school thespians in various Pennsylvania counties. This year’s nominees came from Cumberland, Dauphin, Lebanon, and Perry, and Lancaster Counties.

The Apollo Awards were canceled due to COVID-19 each of the past two years, but this year’s musicals were performed live with no cancellations, meaning that nominations could be announced without complications. The Apollo Awards ceremony will take place on May 22 at the Hershey Theatre and will feature performances from each school nominated for Outstanding Musical as well as individual performances from Outstanding Lead Actor and Actress nominees.

Nominations were announced late Tuesday afternoon on the Hershey Theatre Apollo Awards Facebook page. Greenwood High School of Perry County led the way with eight nominations, including Outstanding Musical, Outstanding Dance Number, Outstanding Lead Actor, and Outstanding Lead Actress. Encore! Home School Productions was close behind with seven nominations, followed by Palmyra Area High School with five and Lower Dauphin High School with four. Seven schools received two nominations apiece, and two schools received a single nomination. In addition, Capital Area School for the Arts and Central Dauphin East High School each received two honorable mentions, and two other schools received one honorable mention each.
